Treatments for major depression disorder

Note: Lest they not be lost in the below mass of information, the important points about the treatment of major depression disorder are as follows:
 :

  1. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) concludes that there are only three treatments--antidepressant, psychotherapy, and electroshock (ECT)--which are effective in treating mild to moderate depression. Only antidepressant therapy and ECT are found to be effective against severe depression.
  2. NIMH and The American Psychological Association both conclude that the psychotherapies well established as being effective in the treatment of mild to moderate depression are cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal.
  3. While showing promise, the jury is still out on the safety and efficacy of St. John's wort. More from Duke University later this year on what is considered the definitive study on this herb.
  4. There is new evidence that exercise may be as effective as antidepressants in relieving depression.
